Hello and welcome to summer school!  This is a short term, running from June 27th to July 29th.  You may work whatever hours you deem fit - just know that you will need to work hard to finish the class and earn credit.  You can do it!

If you have questions, there are a couple of ways you can get hold of me:  Phone:  503-347-1090 and email: struyk@gbwebacademy.org

Almost all of the English classes have been abbreviated to fit the short schedule which means you need to look for the tabs that say "removed" within the class, and know that you do not have to do those assignments.  They have also been removed from the grade book, so they won't show up there.  They will show up on the syllabus and schedule, so ignore those assignments found there.

Let me know soon if you have questions because we don't have a lot of time to get them answered!

Again, welcome!  If you organize your time well, you will do fine.

~Christina Struyk-Bonn

Extra Credit Field Trip!

We have had  a few people drop from the extra credit field trip this Thursday.  If you are interested, let me know ASAP.  We will be heading to hear Art Spiegelman's lecture on Thursday.  The lecture starts at 7:30 so we will be taking the MAX down, heading up to hear the lecture, and then coming back.  If you want to go, you do need the field trip permission form signed - let me know so I can send it to you.

GRADES:  Grades come out next week!  Catch up, turn in as much as you can this week because anything you don't get turned in will translate into a zero on the report card and your grade will drop.

Two weeks until progress reports come out!

In two weeks, grades will be sent home.  If you are behind in your classes, the assignments that are not complete will translate into zeros and your grade will drop on the progress report.  In these next two weeks, try to catch up!

Art Spiegelman Field Trip:  Here are the details for the Art Spiegelman field trip.  On Thursday, April 28th, we will meet at the MAX station near CAL (Civic Drive MAX Station) around 5:45.  The train leaves at 6:00pm and we should arrive downtown around 6:45.  Because we have to walk up to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, I think it best that we arrive a bit early so we can easily make it to the lecture by 7:30.  The tickets are no cost to you - we have the tickets - but the MAX trip will be a few bucks:  Youth/Student:  $1.50, Adult : $2.35.  We will need a ticket for the trip there and the trip back.
Assignment:  For the field trip, students will need to write up a few answers to questions about the lecture.  I will have a handout for you when we meet at the MAX station.  If you have questions, please email me:  struyk@gbwebacademy.org

Teachers attending:  Christina Struyk-Bonn, Steve Ellsberg, Christeen Calhoun
Parent Chaperons:  Donald Hendrix, Gabriela Poderalu, Jason Schaff

Grades come out next week!

Yes, this is the last week to turn in assignments for the first six weeks of the semester.  Remember that any assignment not turned in from this first six weeks will be added to your grade as a zero, which will negatively impact your grade.  Get those assignments turned in!

FIELD TRIP!!!

Twelfth Night is on!  We will be going to see James Navlyt in his first Shakespearean performance on Wednesday, March 16th, at 7pm.  Check out the Black Swan Youth Theatre for more information, and if you are interested in going, let me know by Friday, March 11th - you will get extra credit for your English class.  The cost will be $5.00, a gas donation to our drivers, and you will need to have a parent fill out a permission form.  Let me know ASAP if you want to go.

Two extra credit opportunities for English

Field Trip Possibility!  Our own James Navlyt will be performing in "Twelfth Night" through the Black Swan Youth Theatre March 10-12 and 16-17. If you're interesting in going, let me know and we'll try to organize a group.  You will certainly earn extra credit points in your English class for attending!

Field Trip Possibility #2:  Arts and Lecture Series:  This is a big one and anyone who attends must have parent permission.  We will be attending the Portland Arts and Lecture Series on April 28th to listen to Art Spiegelman.  He wrote Maus, a Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel about his father's experience during the holocaust.  We'll head downtown on the MAX, attend the lecture at 7:30, and meet after at an agreed-upon location to talk about the lecture.  Again, you will earn extra credit through your English class.  Start thinking about this possibility!  We are so excited to make this opportunity available.

Welcome to second semester English!

"Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration."   ~Thomas Edison
Work hard in your classes, and you will do well.  Please let me know if you have questions, if you are wondering about the curriculum, if you are having a difficult time with the technology and let's get past the issues so you can do your finest work.  I am looking forward to this semester and know that if we work hard, we will succeed.  Again, welcome.

Last Week to Turn in Assignments for First Semester

Oh but isn't it a relief to finish!  You've got four days left in the term and teachers will accept assignments until 4:00pm Thursday afternoon.  Keep doing great work.

Quick reminder:  READ and RESPOND in the DISCUSSION FORUMS!!!  Without responding to someone's post, you will not receive credit for the discussion.  Remember, a discussion needs to be two-way; without speaking to someone and reading their pieces, you are not having a discussion.  This is an easy way to get credit - read and respond!

Grades will be plugged in on Friday and you will receive them in the mail next week.

Remember to contact your mentor and sign up for second semester classes.
It's time for a new start and some fresh classes!
